From Above: Our Story Continues…

Our Story Continues is our way to connect parents to what kids are talking about and experiencing in the Sunday morning teaching. We want to help to equip parents and spiritual parents with Scripture, talking points, and experiential activities to continue to disciple their kids well every day of the week.

Preschool

1-YEAR-OLDS

Series: Miracles
Summary: This week, children focussed on the story of Jesus’ miracle of multiplying the fish and loaves.
Big Idea: Jesus shows us he is God.
Key Verse: All things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27b

  1. SING Download “J-E-S-U-S” from The Meeting House Kids album.
  2. READ the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 in a children’s Bible or on the Bible App for Kids, The Big Picnic.
  3. PRAY Make a point to pray before each meal with your child, thanking God for providing food for your family as he provided for the crowd in Bethsaida.

2-3 YEAR-OLDS

Series: Miracles
Summary: This week, children heard the story of Jesus miracle on the water where he calmed the wind and waves.
Big Idea: Jesus shows us he is God.
Key Verse: “All things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27b
God Story: Jesus Calms the Storm | Luke 8:22-25

    1. SING Download “J-E-S-U-S” from The Meeting House Kids album.
    2. READ the story of Jesus calming the storm together in a children’s Bible.
    3. LEARN the key verse as a family.
    4. PLAY Make a sail by using plastic straw and weaving it through a triangle piece of paper. Use a plastic lid (sour cream or yogurt containers work well) for the base of the boat by making a little mound of play dough and adhering it to the middle of the lid and sticking the straw into the play dough. Fill a wash tub with water and re-enact the story with your child. Pour water into the tub to mimic the rain and move the tub around to mimic the waves and wind. Take turns with your child being the disciples yelling for Jesus to wake up because they are afraid they will drown while the other person can be Jesus and tell the storm to stop.

Summary: This week children heard the story of Jesus miracle on the water where he calmed the wind and waves. The waves and water obeyed Jesus because they know he is God, their creator.

  4. MAKE In a plastic water bottle or transparent jar, pour 2 parts water (with blue food colouring or glitter if you have it) and 1 part vegetable or baby oil. Cut a little boat out of a plastic plate that will fit through the opening of the container and close it shut. Have your child create the storm by shaking the bottle and then have them say “Stop” and hold the container still so that the water will settle and the boat will rise to the top.

Grades 1-5

Summary: This week, kids learned that Jesus was the greatest person who ever lived and that is because he is not just human but also God and God is greater than all.
Series: John | Living Water
Big Idea: Jesus is greater than everything else.
God Story: From Above | John 3:22-36
Key Verse: God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. Anyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life. John 3:16

  1. READ John 3:27-36. Clear up any of the challenging words in the passage (like bride and bridegroom) and discuss with your child the comparison that John is making. Ask your child, who John is talking about as the bridegroom. How does Jesus demonstrate the characteristics John talks about (being greater than all, tells what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts what he says, tells the things that God says, is full of the God’s Spirit, loved by the Father, has power over everything)? Listen to examples from your child’s knowledge of the stories of Jesus life and his closeness to the heart of God the Father.
  2. WATCH the video teaching below with your family this week. Talk about the video as a family. What stood out to you? What did you like? What did you want to ask a question about? (Tip: If it’s helpful, consider pausing the video as you watch it together, and ask questions or talk about things that stick out to you as you go!)
