Kingdom of Heaven: Our Story Continues…

Our Story Continues is our way to connect parents to what kids are talking about and experiencing in the Sunday morning teaching. We want to help to equip parents and spiritual parents with Scripture, talking points, and experiential activities to continue to disciple their kids well every day of the week.

Preschool

1-YEAR-OLDS

Series: Serve
Summary: This week, children focussed on the story of Jesus welcoming a group of children to him and explaining to the adults that they could show them how to accept the Kingdom of Heaven.
Big Idea: Jesus wants us to serve others.
Key Verse: Serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13b

  1. SING Download “Gonna Serve” from Little Praise Party: Taste and See album.
  2. READ the story of Jesus welcoming the children to him together in a children’s Bible.
  3. SHOW AND TELL Throughout the week, find examples of things that make children around you special (friends, cousins, neighbours). As you talk about these special children with your child remind them Jesus thinks they are special and loves them too.

2-3 YEAR-OLDS

Series: Serve
Summary: This week, children heard the story of the two sons of Zebedee, whose mother asked Jesus to place each of her sons at the right and left hand of Jesus in his kingdom. Their mother wanted them to be the most important but Jesus explained to her and his disciples that those who serve are the most important in God’s Kingdom.
Big Idea: Jesus wants us to serve others.
Key Verse: Serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13b
God Story: Jesus Teaches us to Serve | Matthew 20:20-28

    1. SING Download “Gonna Serve” from Little Praise Party: Taste and See album.
    2. READ the story of Jesus and the 2 sons of Zebedee in a children’s Bible together.
    3. SHOW AND TELL As you are out shopping with your child this week, let other people go first in line ahead of you (at the grocery store or drive-thru, etc.). As you do this, remind your child of the story this week and Jesus’ words about how those who will be first in his Kingdom are those who serve others. Explain to them how letting other people go ahead of you is serving them and following Jesus’ example.

  3. SHOW AND TELL Throughout the week, invite your child to be last in participating in an activity or receiving something. For example, when snacks or meals are being handed out or when lining up for the slide. Give your child opportunities to put others first by having her/him hand out items to other people. Remind your child that when they put others first they are serving those around them like Jesus taught.

Grades 1-5

Summary: This week, kids learned about the nature of the Kingdom of God through Jesus’ comparison to a seed planted in the ground and a mustard seed.
Series: Mark | Redefined
Big Idea: Jesus shows us a new kind of family.
God Story: The Kingdom of Heaven is Like | Mark 4:26-34
Key Verse: Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me. And anyone who welcomes me also welcomes the one who sent me. Mark 9:37

  1. READ the story of Jesus explaining the Kingdom of God to his disciples in Mark 4:26-34. As you read each comparison, discuss with your child what characteristics of the Kingdom of God Jesus might be hinting at. Remind your child that Jesus gave his disciples and us a lot of hints about the Kingdom of God but it is also a mystery greater than we can imagine!
  2. WATCH the video teaching below with your family this week. Talk about the video as a family. What stood out to you? What did you like? What did you want to ask a question about? (Tip: If it’s helpful, consider pausing the video as you watch it together, and ask questions or talk about things that stick out to you as you go!)
