Rest: Our Story Continues…

Our Story Continues is our way to connect parents to what kids are talking about and experiencing in the Sunday morning teaching. We want to help to equip parents and spiritual parents with Scripture, talking points, and experiential activities to continue to disciple their kids well every day of the week.

Before you do, say a prayer of thanks together. E.g. Thank you God for time to rest and enjoy together! Amen!]

Kids

GRADES 1-5
Summary: This week in kidmax, kids learned that God enjoys and encourages rest.
Big Idea: God rested from his work to enjoy creation.
Series: Genesis | Creation
Bible Story: Rest | Genesis 2:1-3
Key Verse: “Ever since the world was created it has been possible to see the qualities of God that are not seen. I’m talking about his eternal power and about the fact that he is God. Those things can be seen in what he has made.” Romans 1:20
  1. READ Help your child look up Genesis 2:1-3 in the Bible. Show them how to find books of the Bible; show them the big number is the chapter, and the little numbers are the verses. Read the verse aloud together. Ask your child: why do you think God rested? What do you think he did when he rested? What is one thing you like to do to rest? Why do you think God wants us to rest too?
  2. MAKE In a small bowl, mix a cup of rice with a few drops of lavender oil. After it is thoroughly mixed, pour the rice into a clean sock and sew the opening closed. Your child can place it under their pillow, or in their pyjama drawer, and when they are getting ready to go to bed, they can remember that God rested so he could enjoy his wonderful creation, and he wants us to rest, too, and enjoy!
  3. TOGETHER Take an envelope and label it “Rest and Enjoy.” Then, take small pieces of paper. With your child, think of the different things you like to do together that are restful. Write one idea on each piece of paper. [E.g. Cuddle up and read, play video games, go for a quiet walk in the forest, take a bike ride, have a picnic, etc.] When you have time to “Rest and Enjoy” together, have your child pick a paper from the envelope and do that thing together. Afterwards, say a prayer of thanks to God for the wonderful time you had together.
